The objective of this survey was to obtain records from ABBA Square IA18 (part of Wadi Ranyah) which had not previously been visited and to explore areas in the Empty Quarter near Sharourah for other squares with no previous records.  IA18 was visited and 20 potentially breeding species found there during one camp.  North east of  Sharourah there is a road barrier at the 120 km point which prevents access to the settlement of Kharkir a further 400 km down the road.  I was able to visit NB13 & NB12 for the first time (but only two species in each).  After that I wanted to check out the Magpies in the Jebal Gaha area and spend some time on the Tihama in the extreme south west.  I found at least six Magpies on Jebal Gaha (possibly as many as eight) and there were two on the nearby Jebal Aswad (same square but apparently a new site for the species).  Recently Hussain Al Hrisi of Al Hasher had reported a Magpie near his home there.  This is square JA11 a new square for the species and the furthest south record ever at 17̊ 25.8596'N, 43̊ 02.8439'E. I camped in the area which at 2000m with lots of scrub and juniper is very suitable for the species but was unable to find it myself.

In the following list the two numbers in front of each species name are the ABBA species code and a taxonomic order code derived from the Howard and Moore List (fourth  Edition).

I would like to thank Hussain Al Hrisi for showing me the Magpie site at Al Hasher and for his kind hospitality during my 24 hour visit.  I would also like to thank Duha al Hashemi and Mohammad Shobrak for their company and hospitality during my stay in Jeddah.  Phil Roberts kindly helped me plan visits to sites on the Tihama and Gary Brown provided advice on Empty Quarter locations.  Thanks also to Greq Askew for swapping notes from his own visit to the Tihama at the same time.
